Replacing your shower door runner, roller, cam wheels - HOW TO GUIDE

Upgrading your Shower door runner wheels (Cams)

Many shower cabins and steam showers are fitted with a single runner wheel like the one shown to the right.

These wheels offer a simple solution, that's both easy to fit and and cheap to replace.

As with any single wheel type shower door runner, they are never as good as a twin wheel system. Because they only have half as many wheels, the load per wheel is greater, this puts greater pressure on each wheel and its axle leading to failure. The replacement of single cam wheels with twin shower door runner cams not only spreads the load over twice and many wheels, leading to increased lifespan of the cam, but the whole design and build of them is typically better and will run much smoother.

Furtehrmore, twin cam wheels are far easier to adjust, making alignments of the doors considerably easier and quicker. Aside from also looking a much better (in our opinion), the other reason to consider swapping to twin cam wheels is that they feature a quick relase button. This button means you can pop the lower part of the door very easily out of the runner track for cleaning.

What you need to know about replacing your old single wheel runners.

When fitted into the door through the single fixing hole, Twin Wheels are WIDER than the width of a single wheel type. (See diagram above)

In order to ensure that the Shower doors open fully and also meet in the middle correctly you will need to reposition the door stops. If you look on the inside of the shower rails you will note that there are a number of shower DOOR STOPS similar to the diagram above. There is normally eight of these.

These door stops prevent the door from opening too wide and thus hit the frame and similarly, stop the doors clashing together when they meet in the middle.

Since the twin wheel cams are wider, than single ones, you WILL need to adjust the position of the door stops to provide the same result with the new cams fitted.

You will need to reposition the OUTER door stops 15mm further outwards from their original fixing point.

The INNER door stops (where the shower doors meet) will each need to be moved INWARDS 15mm from their original fixing point.

In most cases the door stops are held in position with a small screw that can easily be removed and used to re-position the door stop.
